This undoubtedly was, by far, THE greatest women’s marathon finish performance ever – 20 women under 2:30 -= fabulous. The gap between 4th place and 20th = 6 minutes and 10seconds*! wow- this was the greatest “mass-finish” of top quality females ever. Utterly awesome.
Some day some woman is going to break Paula Radcliffe’s monster Marathon World Record of 2:15. Perhaps one of these twenty will be the one. Having so many so strong is the best atmosphere in which to help push someone “over the top”.
Any world record is, by definition, unique and wonderful. One might be able to claim that a world-record marathon has to be way high up at or near the top of the greatest sports accomplishments (seeing as it takes 2+ hours of continuous top-quality effort AND results (which can only be the result of years of hard training.
And yet, for me, I find that what’s even more beautiful and awe-inspiring is to have so many simultaneously achieving such quality.

*N.B. This means that, on average, every 15 seconds another one crossed the finish line, or that, the average gap between each woman and the next was about a 1/2 second per mile for 17 consecutive women. That’s massive strength and glorious competitiveness.
I didn’t get to see this race, but this had to have been a knowledgeable-spectator’s delight – probably several sizeable packs of world class athletes hammering mile after mile after mile TOGETHER. Go Get-it Girls!

  7. Clare Ashbrook says:
