ISTANBUL (Sporting Alert) — Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova captured the women’s title at the season-ending WTA Championships after beating Victoria Azarenka in Sunday’s final.

The third seeded Kvitova, won the first match and then whether the storm against a resilient Azarenka to win the game 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. The title was her first WTA Championships title.

“It was unbelievable tennis,” said Kvitova, who has won six titles this year. “We were both really fighting. Every game and every set was very close.

“Maybe I played better on the important points in the match. We both played some of our best here in Istanbul today – it was a final, so why not!”

Her victory in Istanbul on Sunday will see her moving up to world No. 2 – replacing Maria Sharapova, who she defeated at the Wimbledon tournament.

Kvitova defeated seventh seeded Samantha Stosur, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals, while Azarenka got the final after taking care of Vera Zvonareva, 6-2, 6-3 in the semis.

“It’s hard to lose, but I’m glad I lost to such a champion who deserved to win,” Azarenka said in her interview.

“Petra was amazing today. She really did a great job.”

Caroline Wozniacki will remain world No. 1 in the rankings. She too won six titles this season.
