NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Mike Krzyzewski will seek to become the most win coach in the Division I when his Duke side take on a very talented Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.
Watch Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski discuss their close relationship.
After pulling level at 902 with his former coach and mentor Bob Knight with a 96-55 victory over Presbyterian over the week, Coach K now has his eyes well sight on going on his own, even though the Blue Devils (2-0) leader is trying his best to play down the achievement ahead.
“I’d rather go out and try to win this game for the right reasons, and the residual is you get 903,” said Krzyzewski.
“I mean, that’s another perk you get from it. That’s not the perk. The perk is beating Michigan State, going 3-0 and becoming a better team. And then things add up.
“I’m good about not making it that big of a thing, even though I know it’s a big thing. I’m not minimizing it.”
Krzyzewski has another squad full of talents and leading the way for the No. 6 team will be the likes of Ryan Kelly, who is coming off a 17 points performance in the last game, the Plumlee brothers, Miles and Mason and Seth Curry – and Tuesday night should be very exciting.
Michigan State will look to Draymond Green, who scored 13 points and 18 rebounds rebounds against North Carolina and Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson, who were also active.
Other games on Tuesday night will see No. 3 Ohio State and Jared Sullinger taking on a No. 7 Florida side that many pundits are picking to create an upset.
Sullinger commented about the Florida team: “they have a team that comes in and they like to transition and they like to shoot 3s, they like to score. And they’re also physical down low.
“This really determines what type of a team we are. Are we strong enough to handle the transition 3s back to back and then come down and score? Or are we just going to crumble?”
Elsewhere, No. 5 Syracuse (2-0) is back in action again after Monday’s win and go for its third win against Albany (1-1), No. 2 Kentucky and Anthony Davis play the 12th ranked Kansas Jayhawks and Thomas Robinson, while San Diego St tackle No. 11 Baylor, No. 18 Vanderbilt look to improve against Bucknell, while LSU play Coastal Car and the IPFW Mastodons (1-0) go to (13) Xavier (1-0).
