NEW YORK (Sporting Alert0 – Asafa Powell believes Jamaican sprinters could make a clean sweep of the men’s 100 metres dash at the London Olympic Games later this coming summer.

Jamaica now boost three of the world’s fastest sprinters in world record holder Usain Bolt, Powell and Yohan Blake and they will all start as strong contenders for the gold medal in London.

The likes of Americans Tyson Gay and Walter Dix, Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson and French record holder Christophe Lemaitre are all expected to be near the title contenders, but Powell still backs himself and his fellow countrymen to sweep the podium places.

“I don’t know what the Americans are doing, but we [Jamaicans] are working hard,” Powell said, following his 50m victory at the US Open track and field meet in Madison Square Gardens on Saturday.

Asked if Jamaica can win all the medals in the men’s 100m, he said: “Surely it can be done – we have some amazing runners.

Powell, who holds the record for the most sub-10 seconds performances over 100 metres in history, remains the third fastest man ever over the 100m, at 9.72 seconds.

He set world records three times for the 100m.

Another Jamaican, Nesta Carter, who has been a member of both the Jamaican world record setting 4x100m relay teams, is the fourth fastest ever in the distance, at 9.78, while Blake is seventh overall, at 9.82.
