(Sporting Alert) — Kim Clijsters marched on at the Australian Open with another cruising outing on Wednesday, following the victory over Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France.
The defending champion Clijsters picked up an easy 6-0, 6-1 win in the second round to move on at Rod Laver Arena.
Clijsters is ranked as the 11th-seed entering the competition, but is certainly be a top contender to repeat as champion. The Belgian came into the tournament with a left hip injury which forced her to retired from last week’s Sydney International tournament in the semifinals.
Also winning in the second round on Wednesday was China’s No. 5 Na Li, who beat Olivia Rogowska of Australian 6-2, 6-2. Na Li was beaten last year at Melbourne Park by Clijsters.
“I’m feeling always good to come back to Rod Laver Arena,” she said. “This year is much better than last year — more fans come to watch me play, not only from China but all over the world.”
No. 26 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain beat Olga Govortsova (BLR) 6-1, 6-0, but China’s No. 16 Shuai Peng was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Iveta Benesova (CZE).
