NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Jamaican star sprinters Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell-Brown will lead quality sprint lineups in Saturday’s US Open indoor track meet at Madison Square Garden.
TRYING SOMETHING NEW
Powell, a former world record holder over 100 metres, will lineup in the men’s 50 meters dash against solid field, which included American Justin Gatlin, a man he battled with in the early parts of his career.
The indoor appearance will be a rare showing for Powell, who admits that he’s trying something different in an attempt to work on some key areas of his sprinting as he seeks to beat Usain Bolt.
“It’s something different,” Powell said on Thursday. “I’m going to have to get a good start.
“I definitely have to put in the extra work. I’m running indoors to work on the start and trying to execute my start properly.”
The field also includes Powell’s training partner Nesta Carter, who ran the lead-off leg on the Jamaican world record breaking 4x100m relay team.
Antigua’s Daniel Bailey and USA’s Trell Kimmons will also face the starter’s gun.
CAMPBELL-BROWN LEADS WOMEN
Campbell-Brown, meanwhile, heads the women’s field and the reigning World Indoor 60m champion is looking forward a the new type of race.
“I’ve never run the 50 meters before,” Campbell-Brown said. “When you come to these short races you have to get a good start.
“I’m smarter with my training. I don’t feel a day older and I have motivation to work hard. I want to keep my ‘A’ game.”
Americans Alexandria Anderson and Jessica Young and Tahesia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands will take on the Jamaican two-time Olympic 200m gold medallist.
IN OTHER EVENTS
Elsewhere at the meeting, Bernard Lagat of USA will lead a very strong men’s field in the Mile against Kenyans Silas Kiplagat and Daniel Komen Kipchirchir, while David Oliver and Lolo Jones will lead the men’s and women’s 50m hurdles fields.
Christian Cantwell (USA) takes part in the men’s Shot Put, Jenn Suhr (USA), the women’s pole vault and Jesse Williams (USA), the men’s high jump.
