Video Chauncey Billups Injury Impact

LOS ANGELES (Sporting Alert) — The Los Angeles Clippers have been dealt a massive blow with the news that veteran guard Chauncey Billups has a torn Achilles and is out for the rest of this season.

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed the injury, the team said.

Billups has been forced to miss the remainder of the shortened NBA season after tearing his left Achilles tendon during the Clippers’ 107-102 overtime victory at the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

The former world champion with the Detroit Pistons was averaging 14.9 points and 4.0 assists per game this season and his injury is a big blow to the Clippers who were beginning to to hit a rich run of form.

“I feel sick for him,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro to the ESPNLosAngeles.com‘s Ramona Shelburne on Tuesday.

“He’s such a pro. After the game last night it was bittersweet. Everyone was just quiet in the locker room, quiet on the plane. People know how much Chauncey means to us — his character, his leadership.

“Not only his ability to play at a high level, but his character and the intangibles he brings. That’s why we brought him here. I just feel sick for him.”

Billups, a five-time All-Star, was picked up by the Clippers from the New York Knicks in December.

The veteran guard, playing for his seventh NBA team, had been forming a good relationship with Chris Paul – with the Clippers (19-5) leading the Pacific in the Western Conference over the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It’s a tough one,” Del Negro said. “He was just getting everything figured out.

“He was playing great. He’d just hit three 3s in a row, then he turns the wrong way running back down the court.

“It’s tough, but we’re going to do whatever we can as a team and organization to move forward.”

It now expected that Mo Williams will play along side Paul at the shootguard position.
