PHOENIX (Sporting Alert) — Kobe Bryant pulled no pushes in lashing out at the Los Angeles Lakers management for leaving his teammate Pau Gasol wondering about his future with the club.
There have been several rumours about the future Gasol with the Lakers and Bryant believes it is unfair to leave the 31-year-old guessing whether he’s about to be traded.
“If they’re going to do something, I wish they would just … do it,” said Bryant, after the Lakers suffered a 102-90 defeat to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night.
“Listen, he’s been the consummate professional. He’s going out and he’s trying to do what he can. But let’s be real.
“If you didn’t know you were going to be here tomorrow, if your head’s on the chopping block and you feel like you’re just waiting, it’s tough to put all yourself in the game.”
Its been the second time that Gasol had to deal with speculations about his future as Lakers player – following the almost completed deal of Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets – which was blocked by the NBA.
In that deal Gasol was supposed to join New Orleans, but he wasn’t aware of what was happening until the deal fell through.
And it is now believed that the new trade talks have become another distraction for a man, who clearly doesn’t want to leave the Lakers.
“It’s hard for Pau because of all this trade talk and stuff,” Bryant said.
“It’s hard for him to kind of invest himself completely or immerse himself completely into games when he’s hearing trade talk every other day.
“I wish management would either come out and either trade him or not trade him.”
He added: “It obviously starts with myself and Pau and the emergency of Andrew (Bynum).
“But you can’t have one of our pillars not knowing if he’s going to be here or not. Do something. One way or another, do something.
“If they trade him at least you have some type of closure, he gets some type of closure.”
Gasol finished the game against the Suns with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, while Bryant scored 31 points, seven boards and five assists for the Lakers (18-13).
