KINGSTON (Sporting Alert) — Yohan Blake ran a new personal best in the 400 metres at a low-key local meeting in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday.
Blake, the Jamaican world champion over 100m, ran 46.49 seconds for second place behind Allodin Fothergill, who won the heat in 46.29secs at the Camperdown Classics.
The sprint star, who has a personal best of 19.26secs for the 200m, says he feels much stronger, especially after his impressive showing in the first half of the race – although he faded in the closing sections.
“I am much, much stronger this year and faster. Running 46.4 in my first outing is wonderful,” Blake said.
“It’s a wonderful feeling and I ran a personal best, which means the season is going quite well.”
He added: “Alodin Fothergill is a 400m man so he got the better of me. I could have run faster if I had gotten out better. Today was just my first 400m so if I have one more, I will go faster.”
Triple Olympic champion and world 100m and 20om record holder Usain Bolt was expected to race at the meeting as well, but off-the-island business commitment forced him to delay his 2012 campaign.
The women’s race was won by Olympic finallist Rosemarie Whyte, who raced to the finishing line in a time of 52.38.
Davita Prendergast, 52.68 and Schillonie Calvert, 53.50, were the next best performers.
Former Jamaican national champion Oshane Bailey won the men’s 100m in 10.49 seconds.
