BERLIN (Sporting Alert) — Borussia Dortmund cemented their dominance in Germany after hammering Bayern Munich to complete their first league and cup double with victory when they lifted the DFB-Pokal title on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund mauled Bayern Munich 5-2: Video Highlights
A hat-trick of goals for striker Robert Lewandowski and one each from Shinji Kagawa and Mats Hummels setup the impressive 5-2 victory for Borussia Dortmund, who underlined their superiority in German football this campaign.
Arjen Robben, who netted a penalty and Franck Ribery, were the goal scorers for Bayern Munich, which took a dent in confidence ahead of next week’s Champions League final against Chelsea at home.
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was in attendance to watch the final, with Japan midfielder Kagawa, who had been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League reported to be the reason for his travel.
Mario Gotze, who only recently returned from injury was on the bench, but was not used with boss Jurgen Klopp playing it cautious ahead of the upcoming Euro 2012 later this summer.
“From a Dortmund point of view, it’s impossible to imagine a better cup final,” said Klopp. “We struck ruthlessly and we scored great goals.
“What we’re feeling now definitely can’t be put into words.”
Munich coach Jupp Heynckes said: “Congratulations to BVB. Borussia deserved the win. They ruthlessly exploited our weaknesses.
“We were very unfocused in defence today and handed out gifts. All in all, our defensive display was a catastrophe. Borussia Dortmund created one chance in the first half but scored three goals.
“We blew it at the decisive moments and made far too many unnecessary mistakes, and obviously you’ll never win a match if you make such basic errors.
“In the cold light of day, you have to accept we wouldn’t have deserved to win.”
