Richards-Ross moves closer to 200/400 double at U.S. trials

EUGENE, Ore. (Sporting Alert) — Sanya Richards-Ross stayed on course to land the 400/200 double after winning her semi-finals of the women’s 200m at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene.

Richards-Ross, who has already landed the 400m title, sizzled to the fastest time of the day and the second quickest time this year, at 22.15 to take the second semi-final heat.

LSU’s national champion Kimberlyn Duncan crossed the finish line behind her in 22.37 to secure her place in the final.

Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh both ran 22.30 to win their semis – with the latter taking the first race – running with a +3.4 m/s assisted wind.

Carmelita Jeter, the 100m champion got the final slot from the semis with the eight fastest time of 22.64.

On the men’s side, Wallace Spearmon ran the best time of the rounds to take his heat in 20.17, with Calesio Newman and Jeremy Dodson both running 20.28.

Other qualifiers were Darvis Patton, Shawn Crawford and Marcus Rowland.

In other results Angelo Taylor (48.77) and Bershawn Jackson (48.83) clocked the fastest times in the men’s 400m hurdles semi-finals, while Lashinda Demus (54.41) and Georganne Moline (54.72) led the way in the women’s division.

Colorado’s Emma Coburn ran 9:32.78 to beat Bridget Franek (9:35.62) and her fellow teammate Shalaya Kipp (9:35.73) and win the women’s 3000 Meter Steeplechase final.
