MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed that they have an agreed deal to land targeted midfielder Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund.

The Japan international has been heavily linked to the Red Devils and is expected to complete his move, once the medical and work permit processes have been finalised.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with both Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to the Club,” the club announced on its website at www.manutd.com.

“The deal is subject only to the player medical and obtaining a UK work permit. These conditions are anticipated to be completed by the end of June.”

The 23-year-old Kagawa, who has made 71 appearances in his two season at Dortmund, following his move from Cerezo Osaka, is expected to link up with his new teammates in the summer for a reported fee of £16 million, and defender Rio Ferdinand took the time to extend his welcome.

Ferdinand said on his Twitter account: “Welcome to Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to Man Utd. heres to a successful time here bro!”

Kagawa scored 29 goals and had 15 assists during his two years with the back-to-back Bundesliga champion.

Meanwhile, Manchester United missed out at signing Eden Hazard, who instead selected Chelsea, but the Belgian international admits he was in “advanced contact” with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

The playmaker told French radio station RMC: “I’ve always said I wanted to play in England. There was a struggle between Chelsea and United, but according to me Chelsea has the best project.

“I was in advanced contact with both clubs and I spoke to both coaches. I want to be playing in the Champions League every year.

“When they won the Champions League, I told myself: ‘Why not Chelsea?’ The team is young and I have a better chance to play there.

“At 21, Real Madrid or Barcelona would have been more difficult for me. If I play well enough at Chelsea, I could win my place in the starting team and my priority is to play.”

He added: “I spoke with Abramovich, he is very simple and loves football. We were on the same wavelength, he wants to confirm Chelsea’s position at the top. Chelsea have made a good investment for me but I did not put any pressure on them.”
