WIMBLEDON (Sporting Alert) — Match favourite Roger Federer secured a record-equalling seventh title at Wimbledon on Sunday after beating Great Britain’s Andy Murray in final.
Federer entered the encounter as the flashy favourite, after fellow crown favourites Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal stumbled along the way, and he lived up to the tag by seeing off the challenges of Murray to win 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4.
Murray, who received high praises from his opponent prior to the day of the clash, was looking to become Britain’s first men’s singles champion at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
However, his persistent run ended in disappointment, despite making the start he wanted after winning the opening set of the final.
With the win, Federer now tied Pete Sampras with seven Wimbledon titles, on his way to extending his overall Grand Slam record to an impressive 17.
It will also be the perfect moment for Federer, who on Monday, will become the top ranked men’s player. He will be replacing Djokovic, who he defeated in the semis.
