Cleveland, OH (Sporting Alert) – Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and Anderson Varejao pulled down a massive 23 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Washington Wizards 94-84 in the opening game of the 2012-13 NBA games at Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday night.
Irving also added six rebounds and three assists to his stats, while Varejao had nine assists and as many points in the win on the night.
Varejao, according to Cleveland, is the first player to get at least nine assists, nine points and 23 rebounds in a season opener since Wilt Chamberlain in 1967.
He received high praises for his outing.
“It’s the greatest feeling in the world just having somebody that you know what you’re going to get from them every single night,” Irving said of Varejao.
“He almost had a triple-double, that’s typical Andy.”
Tristan Thompson finished 12 points and 10 rebounds and Daniel Gibson ended with 10 points for the Cavaliers.
Jordan Crawford scored 11 points five assists and three rebounds to lead the Wizards, who struggled on the night without star point guard John Wall, who is expected to be out until late November with a knee injury.
Forwards Nene and Kevin Seraphin also missed the game.
