The game also saw defender Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid dismissed for a second yellow card.

With the victory, Madrid qualified for the next phase 5-2 on aggregate.

It took Ronaldo just three-minutes to get on the scoresheet after the Portugal forward beat goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez from 35 yards out.

He doubled his tally in the 24th minute to give Jose Mourinho’s side a 2-0 lead and 3-2 advantage heading into the half-time break.

And after Ramos was sent off in the 72nd minute, Ronaldo completed his hattrick, before Sami Khedira netted as well in the 89th.

Also on Wednesday, Franco Zuculini and Paco Montanes scored on either side of 45 minutes for Zaragoza to beat 10-man Levante 2-0 and go through 3-0 on aggregate.

Mallorca came from behind to defeat Sevilla 2-1, but the latter qualified for the last eight with a 6-2 aggregate score.
