MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Wayne Rooney has been warned that he would regret a decision to leave Barclays Premier League side Manchester United.
This was the message from former United forward Andy Cole.
Those reports have gone as far as suggesting that the England international could leave the Barclays Premier League leaders in the summer and Cole has told the forward to stick things out at Old Trafford.
“I can understand how Wayne may feel,” Cole, who quit United for Blackburn after losing his place to Ruud van Nistelrooy said.
“I look back on what happened to me and, if I had not been so headstrong and stubborn, I could have stayed at United.
“I was not playing regular football at the time, so I was not the happiest man in the world and I was very stubborn and I made up my mind.
“I look back on it in hindsight and I think to myself, ‘I should have stayed.’”
Rooney has been told that despite the Real Madrid snub, he has a massive role to play in Manchester United’s forward movement in the future and Cole wants the 27-year-old to end his career with the Red Devils – something he himself should have done.
“I should have finished my career here. I had a great opportunity to do that. I had just signed a new contract,” he said.
“I had a fantastic relationship with the manager and he was always good for me.”
He added: “Wayne is quality. He will play numerous amounts of games for United.
“He has a lot more games in him here and he will score numerous amounts of goals here as well.
“I cannot see it being a problem. Everyone has been left out of big games and then come back the week after.”
Manchester United lead the Barclays Premier League by 12 points over Manchester City and Ferguson is expected to continue to rotate his squad.
