(Sporting Alert) — Captain and Midfield maestro Xavi returned to the starting line-up and Spain defeated 10-man France 1-0 to resume normal service in their World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign.

The world champions, with the win, moved back atop of Group I with 11 points with France second with 10.

Barcelona striker Pedro scored the all important goal for the defending World Cup and Euro champions when he guided home a cross by Nacho Monreal in the 58th minute.

Both teams had several chances to score, with France winger Franck Ribery get two and full-back Patrice Evra getting the best opportunities.

Their efforts though were brilliantly saved by Victor Valdes.

Manchester United forward Robin van Persie scored a brace, including a 64th minute penalty and made another and Netherlands beat Romania 4-0. Rafael van der Vaart and Jeremain Lens were the other scorers for Holland in the win.

In Swansea, Croatia came from a goal down to beat Wales 2-1, with Dejan Lovren and Eduardo scoring in the second half to cancel out Gareth Bale’s first half penalty kick.

Top man Mario Balotelli scored both goals for Italy to ease past Malta 2-0 on the road, while Matej Vydra fired home a brace for Czech Republic to stay in the hunt for a World Cup 2014 slot with a 3-0 victory at Armenia.

Elsewhere, Portugal, playing without the suspended Crisitano Ronaldo, beat Azerbaijan 2-0 with the goals coming from captain Bruno Alves and Hugo Almeida in the second half.
