Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed the pole position for Sunday’s German Grand Grand Prix, following the qualifying sessions this weekend.
While his Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg was battling back from a nightmare, Hamilton delivered an impressive session to get the better of home favourite Sebastian Vettel at the Nurburgring on Saturday afternoon.
The Great Britain star driver’s late effort on soft tyres was enough to pip the Red Bull driver by a tenth of a second, with Mark Webber third in the other Red Bull and Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean fourth and fifth for Lotus.
“I anticipate they will both be strong. Of course it will help if we can get into Turn One in the lead and try to hold them behind,” Hamilton said.
“We have [tyre] degradation issues but I don’t think it’s impossible.”
He added that trying to be Red Bull in Germany will be a very difficult challenge.
He said: ”I think it’s going to be very hard. The Red Bulls have obviously made a step this weekend. I think a lot of teams have made a step forwards.
“Webber said to me that these tyres seem to work really well on his car so I think perhaps they have had, who knows, potentially they have gained a better advantage than we have by switching tyres. His long run was very strong the other day.”
