BARCELONA (Sporting Alert) — Barcelona registered a late victory, while Real Madrid were held in Spanish La Liga action on Saturday.

It took a late Alexis Sanchez strike to seal all three points for Barcelona against a heartbroken Sevilla, after the defending champions wasted several opportunities earlier in the game.

Dani Alves and Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 2-0 lead, but Sevilla, through goals from Ivan Rakitic and Coke Andújar, pulled level with a minute to go in regular time.

However, substitute Sanchez pounced on a loose ball and fired home into the back of the net, this after Messi had made another one of his brilliant solo runs in stoppage time.

At El Madrigal, a spirited Villarreal side picked up a valuable point against Real Madrid to remain undefeated this season.

A host of early pressure led to Cani giving Villarreal the lead and the home side could have gone even further ahead had it not been for some stunning save by goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

New signing Gareth Bale, making his debut, following his world record move from Tottenham, slid home to score Real Madrid equalizer and teams went into the break locked at 1-1.

The visitors took the lead shortly after the hour mark when Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot deflected home, but another former Tottenham player, Giovani dos Santos, found the tying goal in the 70th minute, as both teams battled to the 2-2 tie.

Earlier David Villa and Diego Costa were both on target as Atletico Madrid defeated Almeria 4-2 to remain at the top of the table standings with Barcelona on 12 points.
