(Sporting Alert) — Leading driver Sebastian Vettel starts in pole position at today’s Italian Grand Prix as the Red Bull driver looks to increase his lead at the top of the drivers standings with another victory this season.
Joining him at the front is his fellow Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, while Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg sits their in the lead off.
“It’s a bit of a surprise to have both cars at the front at a place where historically we’ve had bad years,” Vettel said.
“We have tried our optimum every year, and some years we’ve been closer, some far away, but this year we’ve a strong car.
“It was still a tough session, but we managed to get through and get a good result.”
Meanwhile, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, the winner at this event last year, will start in 12th position and he admitted to driving “like an idiot,” following a second practice session disaster.
The position was Hamilton’s worst qualifying outing since the Malaysian Grand Prix three years ago when poor conditions saw him lining up all the way back into 20th.
“I drove like an idiot,” the Briton No. 1 said about his session on Saturday.
“That’s the worst I’ve driven for a long, long time.”
