Carrick will play alongside Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera in the central area of the midfield, while Juan Mata also starts for Jose Mourinho.
But there is no Wayne Rooney, who is still injured, while playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan is not in the matchday squad again, despite being declared fit by Mourinho.
Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic head the attack for Manchester United, with Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw coming into the starting team to play alongside Antonio Valencia and Daley Blind in a four-man backline.
Memphis Depay, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Morgan Schneiderlin are among the substitutes for Man United.
Raheem Sterling, IIkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero and Aleksandar Kolarov are among the substitutes today for Manchester City, as manager Pep Guardiola makes a number of changes for the trip to Old Trafford.
Willy Caballero starts in goal for the Citizens, while Pablo Maffeo Becerra, Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany are in the backline.
