MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Memphis Depay has something to prove to his critics after getting a second chance to prove his talent.
The young Dutch winger was recalled to the Manchester United starting side at the weekend for the English Premier League clash against Watford and he played a big part in the visitors’ 2-1 victory.
Depay scored the opening goal for the Red Devils and impressed his manager, especially in the first-half, and the former PSV Eindhoven star will hope he keeps his place in the side and build on that performance.
Prior to Saturday’s trip to Watford, the 21-year-old was either used as a second half late substitute or an unused figure for Manchester United, after being substituted at half-time in a defeat at Arsenal on Oct. 4.
It’s no secret that the form of Depay since joining Manchester United on a £25 million fee in the summer has not been good enough.
In fact, even the player himself admits that he had been struggling to adapt to the step-up life in England.
He has been working hard with Manchester United icon and the club’s assistant manager Ryan Giggs and there are signs that the young attacker has made a few strides forward.
He’s expected to keep his place in the starting lineup for the Champions League clash with PSV, given the lengthy injury list currently at Old Trafford.
Captain Wayne Rooney is expected to return to the starting XI after missing the EPL win against Watford because of illness.
However, it is still unclear if his strike partner Anthony Martial is fit enough to start, while Ander Herrera, who started in the No. 10 position at the weekend, picked up a hamstring injury in the first half and is unavailable on Wednesday.
Martial could be on the bench after he apparently recovered from an ankle injury.
Marouane Fellaini has recovered from a calf injury, but Michael Carrick (ankle) is still out with a foot problem.
Manchester United were beaten on Matchday one by the Dutch champions and will be hoping to return the favourite at Old Trafford.
