MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Daniel Sturridge will start on the bench for Liverpool in this afternoon’s English Premier League game with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Sturridge made his debut and scored in the English FA Cup win at Mansfield last Sunday, but manager Brendan Rodgers has decided to leave his new recruit on the bench.
Also starting for Liverpool is captain Steven Gerrard, who was rested for the Mansfield game, and striker Luis Suarez, who came under pressure, following another hand ball incident.
Liverpool boss believes his team can beat United.
“If you look at one-off games, we were better than Manchester United at Anfield, even with 10 men,” Rodgers said. “We should have beaten Man City, and we drew at Chelsea.
“We are as good as any team in the league. But the difference between us and United is consistency and that bit of depth, not quality.”
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck has been handed the starting role to play alongside leading goalscorer Robin van Persie in the attack for Manchester United.
The EPL leaders have also made adjustments to the backline, as captain Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand start together at the centerback positions for the first time since September.
Anderson is on the bench, but there was no place for Nani, despite him returning from a hamstring injury.
Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa all start for the hosts as well.
Manchester United leads the English Premier League by seven points. The leaders have won seven of their last eight English Premier League clashes with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
