LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Forward Emmanuel Adebayor starts on the bench for Tottenham in this afternoon’s Barclays Premier League clash with Newcastle at White Hart Lane.
It is an interesting decision by manager Andre Villas-Boas, who is without regular first choice striker Jermain Defoe, who picked up an ankle injury last week.
Adebayor only just returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty with Togo.
Meanwhile, Villas-Boas has also decided to start Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey, with American expected to slot into that striker’s role, while new signing Lewis Holtby has gotten his first start since moving to the Premier League.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew, in the meantime, has named an unchanged side from the team that defeated Chelsea 3-2 last week.
This means that Moussa Sissoko,Yoan Gouffran, Jonas Gutierrez and Yohan Cabaye all start today.
The back-four is made up of skipper Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy, Steven Taylor, and Davide Santon.
Newcastle are 15th in the English Premier League standings, while Tottenham are 4th in the EPL.
