Jamaican sprinters win CAC Championships 100m titles

(Sporting Alert) — Jamaican sprinters Sherri-Ann Brooks and Andrew Fisher won the women’s and men’s respective 100-metres titles at the 2013 Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Championships in Mexico on Friday.

Brooks, the 2006 Commonwealth Games champion, clocked 11.21 seconds to win the gold medal to beat Marielys Sanchez from the Dominican Republic, who ran 11.24 and another Jamaican sprinter Aleen Bailey, who posted 11.34 for the bronze medal.

Brooks came into the final with the joint fourth fastest time after running 11.38secs in the heats.

On the men’s side Fisher, who signalled his intentions of being the gold medal favorite with an impressive 10.07 seconds timing, returned to run 10.14 to seal the gold medal.

The Barbadian pair of Andrew Hinds and Ramon Gittens stopped the clock at 10.19secs to take the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

CARIFTA Games U20 champion Zharnel Hughes of Anguilla was seventh in 10.25.

Elsewhere on day one of the competition, Chad Wright of Jamaica won the men’s discus throw with a mark of 60.79m, while Levern Spencer set a new meet record of 1.95m to win the women’s high jump over fellow St. Lucia teammate Jeanelle Scheper, who did 1.92m.
