Lecomte hits jumper, No. 2 Baylor beats Iowa State, stays undefeated

WACO, Texas, Sporting Alert — Manu Lecomte scored a go-ahead jumper over a defender with 8.2 seconds remaining and No. 2 Baylor escaped with a 65-63 victory over Iowa State to stay undefeated this season. The win saw Baylor staying 1 of only 2 remaining undefeated teams left this term after No. 1 Villanova suffered a loss at No. 18 Butler on Wednesday night.


With the game tied a 63-63 and only 24 seconds left, Lecomte, coming out of a timeout, dashed down the court before shooting over the taller Matt Thomas to give Baylor (14-0, 2-0 Big 12) the lead and the home side held on for the win in its Big 12 home opener.

Jo Lual-Acuil had 15 points and eight rebounds and Johnathan Motley added 13 points and 12 boards for the Bears.

Jake Lindsey finished with 10 points off the bench for Baylor, while Ishmail Wainright grabbed seven rebounds and dished out eight assists in the win.

Nazareth Mitrou-Long led Iowa State with 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting and Morris ended with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists but missed a late jumper as he tried to tie the game.

Deonte Burton scored 11 points in the defeat for the Cyclones (9-4, 1-1), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Baylor trailed 61-55 with 5:33 remaining, but outscored Iowa State 10-2 during that span and held the visitors scoreless over the final 2:22 of the game to secure the win.

The Bears have won five-straight games against Iowa State, which is the longest winning streak in the series for either team.

Iowa State leads the all-time series 17-15, but has a miserable 12-2 record against Baylor on the road.


Iowa State will return home to host Texas on Saturday night.

The Bears are also on home soil again this weekend as they prepare to entertain Oklahoma State on Saturday.
