May 18, 2015 (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United target Nicolas Otamendi wants to play in the English Premier League, Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says.
Otamendi has been a long-time target of the Old Trafford club and it is understood that current boss Louis van Gaal in very interested in signing the Valencia defender is the summer transfer window.
And Balague, who has been following the latest updates involving Spanish clubs, tweeted that Otamendi’s dream is to play in the Premier League.
“On Otamendi. Sources close to the player say his dream is to go to the PL and United will continue trying to get him,” Balague said.
He added: “Valencia pessimistic.”
Manchester United are desperate to add a central defender or two to their squad to compliment the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling and many believes the Argentine international would be a hit at Old Trafford.
Another center-back heavily linked with the Red Devils is Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and it is understood that talks are currently taking place to iron-out a deal for the summer.
If Van Gaal is successful in signing Hummels and Otamendi, it would certainly be a step in the right direction for the club, as he seeks to challenge the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the Premier League title next season.
Meanwhile, Balague also gave an update on targeted goalkeeper David de Gea, who has been strongly linked in the last few months with Real Madrid.
Reports in the Spanish media are claiming that De Gea has already agreed personal terms to join Real in the summer, but Balague said the Spaniard has not yet made a decision whether to leave the Premier League club for the La Liga giants.
“He is a target,” Balague said on Sky Sports News HQ. “They have been saying it for a while.
“There have been agents of goalkeepers – the top goalkeepers in the world in some cases – who have gone to Real Madrid and said ‘how about our guy?’ and the answer from Real Madrid is ‘we want de Gea’.
“He has not committed himself as has been published in the Spanish media. He hasn’t signed anything with Real Madrid but he has got a decision to make.
“What is interesting is that in the past the presence of (Iker) Casillas would have been an issue but I’ve got the impression that he has changed his mind on that and he actually doesn’t mind.
“He will accept the challenge if he goes to Real Madrid and if Casillas is there.”
Manchester United have confirmed they offered De Gea a huge deal to persuade him to stay with the club, but boss Van Gaal admitted there is nothing else they can do and the 24-year-old, who has been the best player at Old Trafford this season, must want to stay.
It is believed the final decision will be more than just what De Gea wants.
“On the table, there is an offer from Manchester United which increases his wages by five times and he will not earn as much money at Real Madrid,” Balague outlined.
“The money is an issue but he also has to make a decision that also is to do with personal interests – his family is not there all the time and his girlfriend would love to be in Madrid more than in England.
“All in all, it is a decision that is as much personal as it is professional.”
