Manchester United confirms South Africa pre-season tour

MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) – Manchester United have announced that they will be touring South Africa during their pre-season preparation this summer.

The Barclays Premier League runner up will make the trip next month where they will be facing AmaZulu FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Mandela Day, which is 18 July and Ajax Cape Town on 21 July.

“The training camp and matches in South Africa will be an important part of our preparations for the 2012/13 season and an excellent chance to renew our acquaintance with our loyal and enthusiastic fans in South Africa,” Manchester United chief executive David Gill said.

Everyone has fond memories of the visits there in 2006 and 2008 and, of course, of the exceptional organisation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.”

The club said that the games will be “sponsored by the country’s leading mobile operator MTN.”

MTN is Manchester United’s mobile telecommunications partner in Southern Africa and it will form the MTN Football Invitational, which is to highlight the aims of Mandela Day.

“We are delighted to be delivering Manchester United’s pre-season tour to South Africa. Using our global network we’ll be supporting the team in their preparation for the Durban and Cape Town legs of the tour, ensuring that the team are ready to deliver success on the pitch ahead of the 2012/13 season,” said Charles Brewer, managing director for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa.
