LONDON (SportingAlert) — Sky Sports is reporting that Manchester United could be close to signing a new defender during this transfer window.
Sky Sports is reporting that their sources are saying that Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo has handed in a transfer request in attempt to move to a bigger club.
It is understood that the Argentina international has told his Portuguese club that he wants to join English Premier League giants Manchester United and work with Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.
According to reports in Portugal, the 24-year-old refused to show up for training on Tuesday, but Manchester United are keeping silent about any possible move.
Rojo has previously been linked with a move to another EPL side, Southampton, but after reports claimed that Sporting Lisbon rejected to bids, Manchester United entered that race land his signature.
It is believed that the Red Devils have made a £16m bid for the defender, who is also being linked to Serie A side Napoli.
Van Gaal and Manchester United missed out at signing Thomas Vermaelen, who went to Barcelona instead, while Borussia Dortmund are reluctant to sell Mats Hummels.
