Manchester United travels without Rooney, van Persie and Ferdinand

(Sporting Alert) — Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney were amongst the star players left out of Manchester United’s squad for Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray.

With Manchester United already qualified for the knockout round, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has also decided to leave out senior players Rio Ferdinand, skipper Patrice Evra, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Phil Jones is in the travelling party, but Chris Smalling was left home.

It is highly likely that Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez will start up front in Istanbul, while Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher and Anderson are all set to start.

Manchester United Squad: Sam Johnstone, Anders Lindegaard; Rafael, Alexander Buttner, Phil Jones, Tom Thorpe, Marnick Vermijl, Scott Wootton; Michael Carrick, Davide Petrucci, Larnell Cole, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Nick Powell, Ashley Young, Ryan Tunnicliffe; Javier Hernandez, Joshua King, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda.
