Lionel Messi vs Pele: Argentina And Barcelona Forward Moves Past Brazilian Legendary In Calendar Year Scoring

MADRID (Sporting Alert) — Lionel Messi’s brace in Barcelona easy 4-2 La Liga win on Sunday saw the Argentine international surpassing Brazilian legend Pele milestone of goals in a calendar year.

Messi scored in the 44th and 70th minutes to notched his 75th and 76th goals in 2012 – moving past Pele and pulled within nine goals of Gerd Mueller’s all-time record.

The forward netted just before half-time to go equal with Pele’s 1958 total before adding another to move second behind Müller, who scored 85 goals in 1972.

According to Infostrada Sports, Messi’s double was the “77th match for Barcelona in which he scores at least twice.”

Meanwhile, Cristian Tello scored between the goals by Messi, after he netted Barcelona’s third in the 45th minute for the 3-0 half-time lead.

Michael Pereira in the 55th and a penalty from Victor Casadesus three minutes later, pulled the score to 3-2, before the best of Messi came out to move to a two goal cushion.

Midfielder Xavi had opened the score in the 28th minute for Barca.
