Breece Hall scored on a 3-yard run to give Iowa State the lead with 1:25 remaining and then the Cyclones held off last-minute drive by Sam Ehlinger to setup the victory.
After Iowa State sacked Texas quarterback Ehlinger on third down, Texas sent out Cameron Dicker to try for a long range field goal, but the kicker sent his 58-yard attempt left of the goal as time expired.
Friday’s win means the Cyclones (7-2, 7-1) have now defeated Oklahoma and Texas this year, something that had been rare in their result columns.
In fact, from 1991-2019, the Iowa State went 4-33 against the Sooners and the Longhorns.
The travelers have almost locked up a spot in the Big 12 championship game for the first time.
Hall, who entered the game as the dangherman for the Cyclones, rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries, which was his first game under 100 yards this season.
Meanwhile, Brock Purdy completed 25 of 36 for 312 yards and one touchdown when he connected with Sean Shaw Jr. from 35 yards.
Charlie Kolar caught six passes for 131 yards in the win for Iowa State.
Texas quarterback Ehlinger went 17 of 29 on completed passes for 298 yards and one touchdown and ran for another 65 yards and a score in what was his final home appearance for the Longhorns (5-3, 4-3).
Brennan Eagles pulled down five catches for 142 yards for Texas.
Iowa State have now won seven games in Big 12 conference play for the first time and win against West Virginia next week would see the Cyclones securing a spot in the Big 12 championship game.
