LONDON (Sporting Alert) — The following is the scoreboard at the end of play on the opening day in the first Test match between England and New Zealand at Lord’s on Thursday.
After losing the toss and was sent in to bat, England recovered from a troubling start of 30 for five to reach 354 for seven at stumps, but Joe Root and Ben Stokes fell short of making centuries.
The hosts top order batsmen struggled to deal with New Zealand pace bowlers in the opening session, but battled back with impressive middle order partnerships to take the upper hand at the close of play.
With their team in trouble and four batters already back in the pavilion, Stokes and Root put on 161 runs for the fifth wicket, with the latter falling two shy of his seventh Test hundred after he was caught off the bowling of Matt Henry for 98.
All-rounder Stokes also missed out on making the first hundred of the series, when he was bowled for 92.
There was a half century for wicketkeeper/batsman Jos Buttler, who made 67, while another all-rounder Moeen Ali ended the day undefeated on 49.
He and Buttler put on 103 runs for the seventh wicket to further strengthened England’s remarkable first innings recovery.
Adam Lyth, playing his first Test for England made just seven runs, with his opening partner and captain Alastair Cook failing for 16.
Ian Bell and Gary Ballance both fell for one run.
Debutant Henry finished with day with three wickets for 93 runs off 23 overs, while Trent Boult has so far taken two wickets for 70 runs.
England handed debuts to bowler Mark Wood Lyth.
