SALVADOR, Brazil (Sporting Alert) — Diego Costa leads the attacking line for Spain, as the defending champions open their Fifa World Cup title defense against the Netherlands here at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Friday.
This game is a rematch of the 2010 World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0.
The Brazilian-born Costa, who has been in good form this season, was doubtful for the tournament because of a hamstring problem, but after coming through a recent friendly and admit to feeling good, he will lead the line for Vicente del Bosque team.
Andrés Iniesta and David Silva will act as support, with Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets also starting.
Cesc Fàbregas, Fernando Torres, Pedro, Santi Cazorla and Koke all starting on the bench.
For Holland, Manchester United forward Robin van Persie is fit to start tonight, so too is strike partner Arjen Robben.
Jonathan de Guzman, Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong are also in the starting lineup, with Georginio Wijnaldum and Klaas Jan Huntelaar amongst the substitutes for the Orange.
The Netherlands and Spain have met 10 times, with the defending world champions coming out on top five times, compared to the Dutch side’s four.
The other game ended in a 1-1 draw.
