BARCELONA (Sporting Alert) — Barcelona were denied victory in their opening Champions League game against Serie A side AC Milan at home on Tuesday evening.
“In the Champions League teams can create goals out of nothing against you and you can end up with egg on your face as was the case tonight,” Barcelona winger Daniel Alves told UEFA’s website.
“We played a great game but we didn’t kill it off and we saw the consequences against a great rival.”
The defending champions were on their way to sealing victory at Camp Nou until defender Thiago Silva leaped over his marker to head home a corner kick from Clarence Seedorf in stoppage time.
Alexandre Pato gave Milan a first-minute lead, but Barcelona fought back through goals from Pedro strike from close range – setup by Lionel Messi and a stunning free-kick from David Villa to take the lead.
“We could have played better after Barcelona took the lead,” AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said.
“But I’m happy because the team did not collapse until we found the late equalizer.”
