MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Nemanja Vidic has been named on the Manchester United bench for today’s Premier League clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had promised that his captain, who recently recovered from an injury, would be in the team, decided on naming him amongst the substitutes.
Vidic has played just five games over the last 12 months for Manchester United following nagging injuries, but has been training well and said he’s ready to start playing again.
Meanwhile, as the Red Devils look to maintain its six point advantage over Manchester City, Ferguson has decided to stick with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in attack with Phil Jones coming in for Rafael and Chris Smalling in for Jonny Evans.
Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Luis Antonio, Valencia and Ashley Young all started, while Anders Lindegaard, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are all on the bench.
Steven Fletcher is back in the starting line-up for Sunderland after missing the last outing against Reading. The game also sees winger Adam Johnson passing a late fitness test to start.
However, there was no Danny Rose, who failed to recover from his injury.
Meanwhile John O’Shea, who played 256 games for Manchester United before his transfer move, will make his 300th Premier League appearance when he starts today.
Leaders Manchester United are undefeated in their last 20 Barclays Premier League head-clashes with Sunderland and are expected to extend that streak today.
Sunderland beat Reading 3-0 in its last outing, but have won just three of their last 24 Premier League matches. The Black Cats have dropped six of its 16 games played this season and have drawn seven.
