BEIJING, China, Sporting Alert – Day 8 at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, gets underway on Saturday (local time), as the exciting battles in the relays take centre stage.
Eight finals are on the schedule for the penultimate day, including the men’s and women’s sprint 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
All finals will be contested during the evening session.
Great Britain’s Mo Farah will look to complete a long distance double when he goes in the final of men’s the 5000m, where he will be battle with the likes of Imane Merga and Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, Isiah Koech of Kenya and American Galen Rupp.
Defending champion Eunice Sum of Kenya will try to defend her women’s 800m title, but will have her work cut out for her against a very strong field that also includes World Indoor bronze medallist Marina Arzamasova of Belarus, Canadian Melissa Bishop, Nataliia Lupu of Ukraine and Poland’s Joanna Jozwik.
The men’s Discus Throw final will also get going during the evening session with Poland’s world leader Piotr Malachowski, Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres, Christoph Harting of Germany and reigning world and Olympic bronze medallist Gerd Kanter of Estonia leading the way.
The qualifying rounds of the 4x100m relays will take place in the morning session.
On the women’s side, gold medal contenders, USA and Jamaica, as expected, have been kept apart.
Jamaica will race from lane 6 in semi-final one against Great Britain, Russia, Nigeria and Canada, while the United States are in semi-final two, where they will start in the eighth lane against Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Brazil.
In the men’s category, the Americans will start in semi-final one against Great Britain, Japan, Bahamas and Germany.
Jamaica, who will run the heats without Usain Bolt, will go in the second semis against Canada, France and Antigua and Barbuda.
The semi-finals of the 4x400m relays are also set for the morning session.
