ESPN NFL Power Rankings

TEXAS, Sporting Alert – Carolina Panthers had their long winning streak snapped, which means their four-week run at No. 1 came to an end in Week 17 of the ESPN NFL Power Rankings, released on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Shift Atop The Power Rankings

Cam Newton and the Panthers (14-1) fell 20-13 to the Atlanta Falcons on the road on Sunday — the club’s first defeat in 19 NFL regular season games and it led to them being replaced at the top of the Power Rankings by the streaking Arizona Cardinals.

Several NFL experts have been backing the Cardinals (13-2) as the best team in the league this season and on current form, you can’t help but wanting to jump on that bandwagon.

Arizona is on a nine-game winning streak and has won nine straight games for only the second time in franchise history with the last time coming back in 1948-49 seasons when it collected 11 in a row.

Overall, the New England Patriots (12-3) who were dropped 26-20 by the New York Jets over the weekend, remain at No. 3, but the Denver Broncos (11-4), who scored a thrilling 20-17 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Monday Night Football to clinch a spot in the playoffs, are up four places to No. 4 in this week’s poll.

On the move as well were the Jets (10-5) who were the joint-biggest movers this week with a five-place leap — are now in the top five, following the victory against the Patriots at home. They climbed five spots in Week 17 of the ESPN NFL Power Rankings.

Meanwhile, the Bengals (11-4), who are 1-2 since losing quarterback Andy Dalton to injury, are down one spot to No. 6, with the Kansas City Chiefs (10-5) jumping two spots to No. 7 this week.

On Sunday the Chiefs, who started the season 1-5, and is without star running back Jamaal Charles — have now won nine straight games to clinch a playoff berth when everyone has already written them off.

Completing the top 10 this week are the Green Bay Packers (10-5) at No. 8, Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6) and the Seattle Seahawks (9-6).

Falling the biggest this week were the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-10), at No. 26 and New York Giants (6-9), at No. 21. Both clubs fell six places.
