NEW YORK, Sporting Alert Results and scores from the 2016 US Open Women’s and Men’s Singles Round 3 matches Thursday on Day 4 at Flushing Meadows.

On the men’s side, top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic progressed to the last 16 after his opponent, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, was forced to withdraw from the contest because of an injury.

Djokovic, who advanced from the last round with a walkover against the injured Jiri Vesely on Wednesday, was leading Youzhny 4-2 in the first set on Friday.

Meanwhile, Jack Sock stunned 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic when the American picked up a 6-4 6-3 6-3 third-round victory over the Croatian seventh-seed.

“My first time in the fourth round here,” the American said. “It was a big match for me, a big goal of mine.”

He added: “There’s nothing better than playing in front of the home crowd here in New York.

“I put it out there on the line on every point.”

In other round 3 results in men’s singles on Friday, No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France beat South African No. 23 Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-4 7-6(4) to set up a last 16 clash with Sock, while No. 10 Gael Monfils of France defeated Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2 6-4.

In women’s round 3 singles clash, No. 8 Madison Keys of USA battled to a 7-5 4-6 7-6(3) win over Japan’s Naomi Osaka, while the seventh-seeded Roberta Vinci (Italy) topped Carina Witthoeft (Germany) 6-0 5-7 6-3.

No. 14 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat No. 22 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3 6-4, with No. 13 Johanna Konta of Great Britain stopped No. 24 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-2 6-1.

Another highlighted victory came from the unseeded and in-form Caroline Wozniacki, after the Denmark star beat Monica Niculescu (Romania) 6-3 6-1.
