No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan advances to NAIA Soccer quarterfinals

By:Sports Desk Published on: December 2, 2013 8:52 pm Leave a Comment

Montgomery, Ala. — No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan University continued its impressive run this season after the Eagles beat the No. 14 Concordia (Calif.) 2-1 in overtime at 2013 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship – Second Round – Monday night.

Lucas Corderio and Shaddrick Kaphuka, who scored the winner in overtime, netted the goals for OKWU.

With the win, Oklahoma Wesleyan advances to the quarterfinals and will play the winner of No. 6 Benedictine (Kan.) and No. 11 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Head coach Jamie Peterson will be delighted with the maturity level and the way Oklahoma Wesleyan has responded to the bigger stage, after his team was twice beaten in the first round in 2011 and 2012.

The MCAC regular season champions did lose 1-0 to arch rivals Bellevue University in the conference tournament in November, but got an At-Large bid to enter the first round as the No. 3 team in the country.

“Peterson has worked extremely hard in recruiting and working with the right group this season and he’s instill a winning belief into the team,” OKWU SID Gary Smith said after the win on Monday night.

Meanwhile, defeat on the night meant Concordia (Calif.) is eliminated from the championship and ends its season 15-5-0.
