No. 5 seed Louisville upset top-seed Baylor 82-81 in women’s sweet 16

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sporting Alert, Box Score) — Monique Reid knocked down two late free throws and No. 5 seed Louisville upset No. 1 overall seed and big-time favourites Baylor 82-81 in the women’s NCAA basketball sweet 16 on Sunday.

The Cardinals (27-8) knocked down 16 of their 25 three-pointer attempts to seal the thrilling victory with Shoni Schimmel and Antonita Slaughter combining to score 12 of those 3-points.

Schimmel buried 5-for-8 from three point range to finish with 22 points, while Slaughter added 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point. She also had six rebounds.

Bria Smith added 13 points and seven rebounds in the win for Louisville, which almost gave away the game after surrendering a 19 point lead and then found themselves trailing 81-80 with 9.1 seconds left in the game.

But Reid knocked down her two free throws to give the Cardinals back the lead and then secured the victory.

Odyssey Sims paced the Lady Bears (34-2) with 29 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Brittney Griner, who shot just 4-of-19 from the field, finished with 14 points and 10 boards.

Jordan Madden also added 14 points for Baylor, which saw its 32 game winning streak snapped.

The Lady Bears had won 74 of 75 games prior to the defeat.
