Lionel Messi returned to action for Barcelona in the second half, after he was out for two months with a knee injury.

The Argentine international replaced Ivan Rakitic, who was also coming back from a calf problem – in the 57th minute.

Suarez broke the deadlock for the defending champions when he first-time slotted home a ball past goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the 11th minute after he was played in by midfielder Sergi Roberto, who ran through the Real Madrid midfield before making his delivery.

Brazilian striker Neymar doubled the lead for Barcelona in the 39th minute when he finished well with a low shot under Navas after being played through by Iniesta.

Barcelona went into the halftime break leading 2-0 on the road and the home fans were left stunned.

After the break, Iniesta increased the lead to 3-0 when he and Neymar combined with a bit of trick that ended with the Spanish international firing home into the top corner of the goal.

Messi wasn’t on the scoresheet, but the star forward intelligently connected with Neymar to play Suarez through on goal before the Uruguay international chipped the ball past Navas once again to make it 4-0.

Saturday’s victory moved Barcelona to 30 points in the La Liga points standings, six ahead of Real Madrid, who are on 24pts after 12 games.
