Premier League Table: Manchester United Lead Manchester City By 2pts

By:JAMES ANDERSON Published on: January 17, 2021 9:45 pm Leave a Comment

Who is leading the table in the Premier League? Manchester United lead the Premier League table standings ahead of arch-rivals Manchester City while defending champions Liverpool have dropped to fourth place in the standings.

Man United Lead Man City In Premier League By 2pts

Manchester United hold a two-point advantage over Manchester City in the Premier League standings, but the Red Devils have played one more game than the Citizens this season. After playing out a dull 0-0 draw at Liverpool in their latest league fixture, Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s side moved to 37 points, two more than Pep Guardiola’s travelers who hammered Crystal Palace 4-0 in their latest fixture.

From their 18 games played the Old Trafford outfits have won 11 times, drawing four and losing three times. They have a goal difference of +10. Manchester City have won 10 of their 17 matches while drawing five and losing twice. They have a goal difference of +16. A win for Guardiola’s side in its game-in-hand would see them take over from Manchester United, providing that everything remains the same.

Meanwhile, Leicester City hold down third place with 35 points, one more than Liverpool at the end of the latest set of games played this weekend.

Who Complete Premier League Table Top 10?

Tottenham with 33 points at 5th, Everton (32), Chelsea (29), Southampton (29), West Ham United (29) and Aston Villa (26) round out the Top 10. It is worth noting that the Villans have only played 15 games so far, which means victories in all those matches for Dean Smith’s side would see them drawing level with a couple of teams in the Top 4.

What Are The Teams In Relegated Spots?

Sheffield United which fell 3-1 to Tottenham on Sunday, continues to sit at the bottom of the table standings with five points after just one win this season.

They are joined by West Bromwich Albion – currently sitting in 19th place with 11 points and with a -41 goal difference, while Fulham remain four points away from safety. They are sitting 18th on 12 points.

Burnley (16 pts), Brighton & Hove Albion (17 pts) and Newcastle United (19pts) will need to start picking up useful points in upcoming fixtures or run the risk of being dragged deeper into the relegated conversations.

Jack Grealish To Manchester United For £100m? Transfer News

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: January 1, 2021 11:09 am Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER — Manchester United are still keen on signing Jack Grealish according to the British news media.

Should Chelsea Target Grealish?

Grealish was identified as one of the top transfer prospects for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the last transfer window, but a deal for the Aston Villa midfielder collapsed in September.

Manchester United seemed to have cool talks for the England international after the deal fell apart, but it is now understood that Solskjaer is still interested in the player and has told the hierarchy to renew talks over a possible deal.

According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils opted out of a £65m move four months ago after refusing to pay so much for Grealish at a time when clubs were directly impacted financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, with several other top clubs now showing serious interest in the player, it is believed Aston Villa are now demanding £100m for their talisman captain.

Manchester United brought in Donny van de Beek last summer for £40m to help bolster the midfield, but with Paul Pogba likely to leave at the end of the season, Solskjaer is seeking to freshen things up with some new talents.

Grealish has been in fine form for Aston Villa since signing a new deal – scoring five goals with six assists and collected three Man of the Match performances in the Premier League with an 81.8% pass success.

Manchester United are sitting second in the Premier League standings, while Aston Villa are sitting fifth.

The two will meet on Friday.

Manchester United, Leicester City Keeping Tabs on Liverpool

The Reds are sitting third in the table standings five points behind Liverpool (31) and just a single point adrift of Leicester City (27).

A win for Manchester United on Saturday would see them move above the Foxes into second place in the EPL standings, while a defeat for Leicester could see them dropping as far as sixth place if results in other games also go against them.

This Boxing Day meeting will be the 29th between the two clubs in the league with United winning 19 and seven ending in a draw.

“They’ve started really well, like they did last season,” former Fox defender and current United captain Harry Maguire said on www.manutd.com. “They’re a great team with great players and a great manager.

“I fully expected them to be up there challenging again for the top four. They had a great result against Spurs, I expected them to go there and get a result. Tactically they’re very good and it will be a tough challenge, but it’s one we’re looking forward to and one we go into with confidence.”

United Won Both Fixtures Last Year

A Marcus Rashford penalty settled the first meeting between the clubs last season, while another spot kick from Bruno Fernandes and a late Jesse Lingard strike sealed a 2-0 win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side.

Manchester United at Leicester City Early Team News

In early team news for the Foxes, leading striker Jamie Vardy is expected to play against the visiting Manchester United after recovering from a slight groin issue. However, Çaglar Soyuncu (abductor) is expected to be out of this one as he continues to recover.

United will check on right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and midfielder Scott McTominay before the game. The pair remain doubtful after picking up knocks in the 6-2 victory over Leeds United.

Manchester United Make Changes

Follow Live Text Commentary

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has decided to rotate his Manchester United starting team for today’s game with captain only Harry Maguire and ace midfielder Bruno Fernandes retaining their places from the 6-2 victory over Leeds in the Premier League on Sunday.

Solskjaer has recalled goalkeeper Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea, while there are returns to the starting XI for defenders Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly, as well midfielder Paul Pogba and forwards Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani.

Dutchman Donny van de Beek comes into the midfield, and Jesse Lingard is back on the bench.

For Everton, manager Carlo Ancelotti has made just three changes from the victory over Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

Jordan Pickford is overlooked for Robin Olsen in goal, while Seamus Coleman makes a return to the starting line-up following injury. Mason Holgate and Andre Gomes are in the team.

EVERTON TEAM NEWS

Starting XI: Olsen, Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Doucoure, Gomes, Sigurdsson, Iwobi, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin. Subs: Pickford, Kenny, Holgate, Tosun, Bernard, Gordon, Davies

MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS

Starting XI: Henderson, Tuanzebe, Bailly, Maguire, Telles, Matic, Pogba, Van de Beek, Fernandes, Greenwood, Cavani Subs: Grant, Fosu-Mensah, Shaw, Fred, Lingard, Martial, Rashford

Although making several changes for this game, Solskjaer is still aiming to win trophies.

Solskjaer said: “We want to improve every season and to improve on last year is to get to the final. Of course, when you get to a final, there’s only one thing that matters and that’s lifting the trophy.

“I remember winning my first trophy and towards the end of my career, I think Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic’s first trophy was the League Cup in 2006. It does give something to a team. We are desperate to get our hands on a trophy. These players are desperate to learn how to win.”

[Added Quotes] Manchester United 6, Leeds United 2 – Premier League Highlights & Report

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: December 20, 2020 1:57 pm Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER — Scott McTominay set a Premier League record with two goals in the first three minutes and Manchester United smashed Leeds United 6-2 to jump to third in the Premier League standings.

Manchester United v Leeds United Highlights

The win took Manchester United to third place in the standings with 26th points, while Leeds United are 14th with 17points. United, who still have a game in hand, are unbeaten in the last seven Premier League matches, with of them being victories.

“That was fantastic. From the first minute we had a plan to get after them, go forward when we got the ball and of course Scott gets two goals in the first three minutes which is a great start to the game,” said Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sunday’s game at Old Trafford tallied eight goals and 43 shots from Manchester United – the most in a Premier League game all season.

“We found a way of getting them going. Just imagine if that had 75,000 people here,” Solskjaer added. “It would have gone down in history as one of the better Man Utd performances against Leeds here at home.

“We’re one third into the season, not even at the halfway point. So league position is not something we’re going to look at. We look at improvement in the team, look at improvement in fitness – because we knew we were going to be lagging behind in fitness and I think it showed in the first few games.

“But now we showed we’re getting a fitter and stronger team.”

The Red Devils are a point off second-placed team Leicester City after their 2-0 win at Tottenham earlier.

Bruno Fernandes also scored twice today, while Daniel James and Victor Lindelof added their names to the scoresheet in the thumping victory for Manchester United, who were winning at home for only the second time in Premier League this season.

The Leeds United goals came from Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas.

“As a team, we played really well,” McTominay to Sky Sports. “We did a lot of video analysis of them, and it paid off.

“Every game is a cup final at this football club. We are on a good run.”

United’s rapid start saw them head into the halftime break with a 4-1 lead.

Leeds United were conceding four goals in the first half of a Premier League game for the first time, while it was the first time Manchester United scored four times in the first half of a Premier League game since September 2016 vs Leicester.

“In the first half we had similar opportunities to the ones that they had, and we weren’t able to score them,” Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa said. “Our attacks came from combination play and their attacks came from the fact we were losing the ball in attacking positions and they would transition from defence to attack.

“Our return was slower than their transition and this was linked to the fact we couldn’t finish our attacks, and our return was not at the speed needed.

“We will correct what was bad and try to keep the good things. But we will not abandon the way we play.”

[VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS] RB Leipzig 3, Manchester United 2 – Champions League

By:OMAR HALL Published on: December 8, 2020 5:41 pm Leave a Comment

Manchester United are out of the Champions League after falling short in the fightback at RB Leipzig on Tuesday. The English Premier League went into the game needing to only avoid defeat, but suffered a 3-2 loss on the road.

There will be a lot of questions asked of the tactics of Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as RB Leipzig outplay the travelers in the opening 45 minutes.

The Red Devils found themselves 3-0 down after 69 minutes after Angelino, Amadou Haidara and Justin Kluivert scored to put RB Leipzig in control.

Bruno Fernandez scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute and Paul Pogba added a second two minutes, but Solskjaer side left themselves too much to do and was eventually dumped.

“We started the game too slow. It wasn’t good enough, the first 20 minutes. We gave everything in the second half but we gave ourselves too much to do,” United captain Harry Maguire told BT Sport.

“We changed the shape after we went two goals down and we looked more comfortable but it’s not an excuse.”

The defeat was a huge blow to Solskjaer, who will again be under pressure to keep his job, but several football pundits believe he should take the blame.

Tim Sherwood on Sky Sports Soccer Special said: “What went wrong? Team selection in my opinion. When he made changes and went to a back four and threw on more creative players like Van de Beek, got bodies forward, they showed Leipzig up for what they are really.

“The defence was too narrow. They were being exploited by the diagonal pass every time. The third was the killer goal. Why didn’t De Gea come and smother it?

“Credit to them, they kept pushing. And Pogba really did change it. You’re thinking it’s on. Ole will look and learn. For me, get your most attacking, creative players on the pitch.”

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson on Soccer Special added: “This is Manchester United. They need to be in the Champions League, not Thursday night football. That result tonight didn’t show well for Solskjaer.

“If Leipzig had won 3-0 you would have come away and said ‘Leipzig are the better team, they played better’. But when he changed it around, it came back to 3-2 and could have easily been 3-3. That just shows you that he got it horribly, horribly wrong at the start of the game.”

Pogba Out, Ronaldo Returning? – Manchester United Transfer News

By:JAMES ANDERSON Published on: December 8, 2020 6:31 am Leave a Comment

Manchester United are well set to sell Paul Pogba this summer, while a club great, Cristiano Ronaldo has again been linked with a move back to Old Trafford, according to reports in England.

Time Up For Unhappy Paul Pogba At Old Trafford?

The future of Pogba as a Manchester United player continues to be at the forefront with his agent Mino Raiola recently stating that it is time for the France midfielder to leave the English Premier League club.

Pogab has only started five Premier League games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season after recovering from Covid-19 and he even suggested that it has been difficult sometimes for him during his comeback from the virus.

However, the outspoken Raiola, who has been seeking a move for Pogba since the beginning of the summer, said the player is not happy at Manchester United and needs to move elsewhere to “express himself” in the way that he wants to.

Pogba’s contract with the Red Devils runs until June 2022, but Raiola warns that the club would be taking a big gamble keeping the World Cup winner that long.

“There’s no point beating about the bush. It’s better to speak out clearly, look forward and avoid wasting time to find culprits,” Raiola said, speaking to Tuttosport.

“Paul is unhappy at Man Utd, he can’t manage to express himself like he wants to and like people expect him to.

“He needs to change team, he needs a change of scenery. He has a contract that will expire in a year and a half, in the summer of 2022, but the best solution for all parties is a transfer in the next (summer) window.”

Ronaldo Returning To Manchester United?

Meanwhile, while Pogba looks well set to leave the Old Trafford setup, one of the club’s icons, Cristiano Ronaldo has been strongly linked with a move back.

According to the Daily Mail, Ronaldo could be on his way back to Manchester United and the English Premier League club’s shirt sponsor Chevrolet is reportedly willing to help finance a move.

Ronaldo had six very successful years at Old Trafford before moving to the Spanish La Liga to join Real Madrid.

During his six seasons with the Red Devils, the Portugal captain scored 118 goals in 292 appearances. He won three Premier League titles, three domestic cups, the Champions League plus the first of his five Ballon d’Or awards.

The 36-year-old left Real Madrid for Juventus in July 2018.

Match Report and Free Highlights: Manchester United Beat West Ham 3-1

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: December 5, 2020 6:36 pm Leave a Comment

LONDON — – Manchester United made it five wins from five away games in the English Premier League after securing a 3-1 victory at West Ham United to move into the Top 4 on Saturday.

The Hammers, cheered on by 2,000 fans, took the lead at London Stadium in the 38th minute when Tomas Soucek took advantage of some sloppy defending at the back post by Alex Telles to put the hosts 1-0 up in first-half.

[cvwp_video_position]

However, Manchester United produced yet another spirited second-half comeback to defeat West Ham on the day they welcomed fans back in stands at the London Stadium.

Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all penciled their names on the scoresheet for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side, which grabbed its ninth consecutive away win to move into fourth place in the EPL standings.

Second half substitute Bruno Fernandes set up Pogba’s superb long-range equaliser which gave West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski no chance of stopping in the 65th minute. Greenwood then netted his first goal of the season with a clinical strike three minutes later.

After hitting the post with an earlier breakaway attempt, Rashford made no mistake on the second time of asking, sealing the victory by lifting the ball over Fabianski, fellowing a through pass on goal by fellow substitute Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, with his strike on Saturday, Mason Greenwood has now scored 20 goals in all competitions, since the start of last season. This is twice as many as any other teenager playing for a Premier League side, according to Opta Stats.

Saturday’s win saw Manchester United extending its club-record away winning run to nine games and moves into the Champions League spot, while West Ham slipped to seventh after the defeat.

STATS AND INFORMATION – Opta Stats

[VIDEO] Should Cavani Start Over Martial Now For Manchester United?

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: November 30, 2020 9:54 pm Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER — – After coming off the bench to score twice, including the game winner against Southampton in the English Premier League on Sunday, ESPN FC discussed whether or not Edinson Cavani should now become the main striker for Manchester United.

Cavani was injected into the game to start the second half at St. Mary’s after manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mason Greenwood with the former Paris Saint-Germain forward.

The Uruguay international who linked up with the Red Devils late after making a last minute move to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, showed that he’s finally rounding into better match shape by scoring a brace and providing an assists in the win.

With Manchester United trailing 2-0 at halftime, Cavani found Bruno Fernandes for the visitors first goal and then scored two headers to earn a 3-2 victory over the Saints.

With Anthony Martial struggling to replicate his scoring form a season ago, ESPN FC Extra Time discussed if super-sub Cavani should now become a starter over the Frenchman.

However, Gab Marcotti, ESPN transfer expert Gabriele Marcotti and senior writer, who urged Manchester United to make a move for Cavani, doesn’t believe the 33-year-old can play every week.

“I don’t think you can get Cavani week in and week out,” Marcotti said.

When pushed to explain his reason, Marcotti continued, “because the man is 33-years-old and coming off a long layoff and you’re playing a ton of games.”

He expects to see Solskjaer alternating in that position a lot to get the best out of Cavani, Martial and Greenwood.

“Martial is a much better counter-attacker,” Marcotti added. “He’s a natural counter-attacker and he’s obviously more durable than Cavani, but in certain games, you’re happy to have Cavani off the bench no question about it.”

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Manchester United 3, Southampton 2 – Cavani Scores 2

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: November 29, 2020 11:43 am Leave a Comment

Video highlights from Southampton and Manchester United game as Edinson Cavani scored twice in the second half, including a stoppage time winner in the 3-2 win for the Red Devils.

Manchester United trailed 2-0 at the half and had to replaced goalkeeper David de Gea due to an unfortunate injury, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to inspire his team to grab the late win.

It was the eighth successive victory for Manchester United in Premier League on the road, which is now a club record.

Southampton took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jan Bednarek headed home past De Gea. The home side doubled its advantage 10-minutes later when James Ward-Prowse beat De Gea again from a free-kick.

In an effort to get to the ball, the Manchester United shot stopper collided with the post and suffered an injury. He managed to finished the half but was forced to be replaced by Dean Henderson at the interval.

Manchester United then began the comeback when Cavani found Bruno Fernandes inside the box to cut the deficit to a goal, as the influential midfielder slotted past the keeper on the hour mark.

Cavani then made it 2-2 in the 75th minute, heading home after being played onside, and then completed his brace with another header, this time converting a cross by Marcus Rashford in the second minute of stoppage time.

Cavani is only the second player to be directly involved in three goals in a Premier League game after coming on as a substitute for Manchester United. The other player is current United boss Solskjaer, who scored four times against Nottingham Forest in February 1999.

“It was always a gamble when he came to club. People were doubting did he have the hunger and desire,” former United captain Roy Keane said on Sky Sports. “We’ve seen proof of it today. He could prove a huge signing for Manchester United.”

Former Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said about Cavani on Sky Sports: “It’s his movement. Every young striker has to look at him. He anticipates; he’s always on the move. He knows where the ball is coming. Yes, it’s a good delivery but it’s all about the movement.”
