(Sporting Alert) — The Africa Cup of Nations Group A table standings have been completed following Sunday’s last round of games in that group.
South Africa, after battling to a come from behind 2-2 draw with Morocco, finished on of top of the group standings with five points, the same as second placed Cape Verde Islands, but the hosts have a better goal difference.
Cape Verde and the Bafana Bafana have identical records of one win and two draws, but the latter have a +2 goal difference compared to the Islands’ +1.
The surprised package of the tournament so far are Cape Verde and their 2-1 win over Angola on Sunday proves that unlike everyone outside their camp, they never paid close attention to what the predictions said.
After falling behind to an own goal from defender and captain Nando, the debutantes got goals from Fernando Varela in the 81st and Heldon, who scored the winner in the 90th minute to claim the historic victory.
Morocco finished with three points, while Angola exited the Africa Cup of Nations tournament with just one point.
Action in Group B will conclude on Monday.
