After both teams played to an exciting 0-0 battle in the first half, Sweden took the lead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 52nd, much to the delight of the travelling fans.
However, Shevchenko, who was doubtful for the starting place, netted the equaliser three minutes later when he launched himself on a cross from Andriy Yarmolenko from the right hand side.
And it was the former AC Milan and Chelsea forward who found the winner six minuted later when he lost Ibrahimovic inside the area and scored another well placed header, – this time from a corner kick take by Yevheniy Konoplyanka.
Shevchenko, with that performance, has certainly picked himself to start the next game in the group against France.
Earlier England and France played to a 1-1 draw at Donbass Arena.
Defender Joleon Lescott leaped high home a free-kick by Steven Gerrard in the 30th minute, but Samir Nasri beat his fellow Manchester City club-mate Joe Hart nine-minutes late to score the equalising goal.
