AP top 25 update: Purdue ascends to No. 1 in week 6

MIAMI, FL (December 12) —— The NCAA AP Top 25 men’s college basketball rankings in Week 6 see Purdue as the new No. 1 team in the nation while Alabama moved up into the top five after beating last week’s top-ranked Houston. The last men’s college basketball poll was released on Monday (12).

Purdue takes over as No. 1 in AP men’s college basketball rankings

Purdue collected 27 votes for first place from a 62-person media panel and 1508 points to move up three spots in the rankings after picking up a pair of wins last week to improve to 10-0 on the season. The move means the Boilermakers replaced Houston as the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 after the Cougars’ loss at home against Alabama over the weekend.

This week No. 2 Virginia received 19 first-place votes to move up a spot, while No. 3 UConn (11-0) earned 15 votes for first place and is up two spots this week. Alabama (8-1) was rewarded for beating Houston with a four-spot jump with the Crimson Tide coming in this week at No. 4, followed by the Cougars at No. 5.

No. 6 Tennessee got the other vote for first place. No. 7 Texas slipped five spots to this week with its overtime loss to Illinois. The Longhorns would have been No. 1 this week. Kansas is down two spots at No. 8, followed by Arizona and Arkansas in rounding out the top 10 teams.

No. 17 Mississippi State made the biggest jump in the rankings this week, moving up six spots after beating Minnesota. No. 19 Auburn had the biggest fall in Week 6 after the Tigers dropped eight spots following an 82-73 loss to Memphis.

Dropped from AP Top 25 rankings in Week 6 are Iowa State (20), Creighton (21), and San Diego State (22).
