MAY 22 (Sporting Alert) — Arsenal will go after Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain in the summer as Arsene Wenger looks to add more fire-power to his attack.

The Gunners are on the hunt for a center forward to give Olivier Giroud some competition for the starting spot and Wenger is believed to be a keen admirer of Higuain, who has proven himself as a goalscorer.

Arsenal were linked with the Argentine international after he left Real Madrid in 2013, but Wenger, reports claimed, didn’t want to foot his wage demand and he was left to join Napoli.

But the UK Daily Star is now reporting that Wenger is once again showing interest in the 27-year-old who is also being linked with Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.

The report claimed Napoli are looking for around £29 million for Higuain, who scored 25 goals this season, including 16 in the Serie A.

Arsenal are willing to go head-to-head with the big boys to land their targeted man and were given a massive boost this week with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone apparently ruling his club out of the race to sign Higuain.

“We decide about the transfer marker together with [Jose Luis] Caminero, [Andrea] Berta and [Miguel Angel] Gil Marin, and we haven’t talked about Higuain,” Simeone was quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

The former Real Madrid forward still has another year left on his current contract with Napoli, and his father and agent, Jorge Higuain, believes his son will more than likely honor his contract and stay for another season.

“There are many teams interested in Gonzalo, but he signed a contract with Napoli for three seasons,” Jorge told Argentine radio station Radio Guemes.

Napoli are desperate to hold on to their leading scorer, but know that if they miss out on Champions League qualification the forward could be persuaded to join the other big hunters.

Liverpool want to sign Higuain, but could lose the race with Arsenal, as they will not be able to offer him Champions League football next season.

In his two seasons in Naples, Higuain has scored 50 goals in 96 appearances already.
