LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Montpellier have confirmed that Olivier Giroud has left the club – paving the way for the reported move to England to join Barclays Premier League side Arsenal.
Giroud has been heavily linked with a move to join the Gunners prior the beginning of the summer, with several news media in Germany and England reporting that he will sign for Arsene Wenger’s side.
On Monday the French champions revealed that the French forward will not be playing with them next season and wish him all the best.
They also hinted that a move to Arsenal is edging ever so much closer.
“I wish him well because he’s a good kid,” Montpellier president Louis Nicollin was quoted as telling French newspaper Midi Libre.
Meanwhile, his son Laurent Nicollin told RMC Sport: “The negotiations have gone very well. We have been in agreement for some days now.”
Arsenal boss Wenger has been watching the European Championship and working as a media pundit and he’s expressed his desire to bring Giroud to Arsenal.
“I think he has exceptional potential and will integrate very well in our collective and our way of playing,” he said.
“He is a real team player and knows how to combine with other players and I’m sure he will do well with us.”
Arsenal have already signed German international Lukas Podolski and he’s eager to start his career as a Gunner and play for Wenger.
“He has been a very successful coach both in Europe and around the world,” Podolski said on Arsenal Official website at www.arsenal.com .
“This definitely helped in making my decision.
“He speaks several languages, and German in particular, which is very helpful. We have spoken to each other on the telephone a few times, which was very good and also made my decision even easier.
“I speak to Per whenever we meet,” he added. “Per has mentioned things about the Club’s organisation, the training ground and the fans, and this has really helped.
“It might have influenced me to a certain extent, but in the end of course I took the decision to come here myself.”
