MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United moved back to five points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League, following a comfortable victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.
A brace from Wayne Rooney and and one each from Danny Welbeck in the first half and substitute Nani in the second – guided the defending champions to a 4-0 win.
Manchester City had cut the gap between the two sides to just two points, following the 6-1 hammering of Norwich on Saturday, where forward Carlos Tevez scored a hattrick.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, who were shocked by Wigan in midweek – responded with the needed victory.
Elsewhere in the English Premier League on the weekend, Swansea put further pressure on Steve Kean and Blackburn with a 3-0 home win, while Graham Dorrans scored in the 22nd minute for West Bromwich to edged QPR 1-0.
Sunderland and Wolves finished 0-0.
On Monday Arsenal will take on Wigan with both sides hunting valuable points for different reasons.
