Barclays Premier League standings; Results – March 31

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United remain 15 points clear atop of the Barclays Premier League standings after edging Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The leaders are now on 77 points and at one point were 18pts clear of second place Manchester City until that flogged Newcastle United 4-0 to move to 62pts.

Tottenham, with goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale defeated Swansea City 2-1 to frogleap Chelsea into third place with 57pts and into a Champions League automatic slot.

Chelsea dropped to fourth after they were beaten 2-1 by Southampton.

Elsewhere Arsenal hammered Reading 4-1 to stay in the hunt for a Champions League place and moved to 53pts, while Kevin Mirallas’ 28th minute goal guided Everton to a narrow 1-0 victory over Stoke City and Wigan edged Norwich by the same scoreline.

On Sunday, Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Aston Villa 2-1 and condemned Paul Lambert’s side to the relegation zone with Reading and QPR.
